Origins of Mythos & Preserving the Breed Archetype

Welcome to this magnificent breed!   Known by many names, the P.R.E., Pura Raza Española, Pure Spanish Horse, Andalusian has an extraordinary legacy.  We breed, raise and train the incomparable Spanish horse in grey, bay, and the rare colors of black & chestnut.

We are passionate about preserving the baroque attributes of this ancient breed, known for its classical type, athleticism, natural collection, intelligence and bravery in battle. Our name Mythos, Greek for 'myth' or mythology, honors this alluring archetypal horse, steeped in legend for thousands of years.

Among our breeding goals is the desire to produce exceptional horses with structural soundness, beautiful breed type, correct conformation and brilliant movement. A sound mind, a kind and willing heart & excellent disposition is also fundamental.

Our foals are imprinted at birth, handled daily, dearly loved & considered precious members of the family. They are well socialized in a herd environment with ample space to develop lung & heart capacity, muscling & strong bones.  Our foundation training is classical dressage, or doma classica.

The heritage of this horse speaks volumes for his versatility as the ultimate multi-discipline performer. He is proven in many arenas-- bullfighting, grand prix jumping, dressage, carriage, western pleasure, eventing, high school exhibition & doma vaquera.  We celebrate his heritage as the consummate athlete. We don't follow fads or trends nor do we breed for a specific single discipline.

We offer exceptional PRE horses to special people who have discovered the extraordinary qualities of the Andalusian. This is a highly attuned, sensitive, intelligent and responsive horse. We selectively place our horses with the goal of finding them the ideal match.   If handled properly, s/he is calm, quiet, unshaken and willing, capable of forming a deep emotional bond and becoming part of your family.  They learn quickly and are very trainable, but develop and mature more slowly than most breeds and must not be rushed. They often remain sound riding partners well into their mid to late twenties.

Extensive research into the bloodlines brought us to the centuries old Cartujano (Carthusian) lines, known for their baroque characteristics. The Cartujano, also called Bocado for the brand of the bit, have traditional round movement still called for by the breed standard, with extreme lift, reach and impulsion, round bodies, great beauty and stamina. They are vastly intelligent & sensitive with gentile temperaments & riveting presence.  They are unmistakably Andalusian in all their glory & very rare with less than 1000 worldwide. They were also the foundation for a famous Lusitano bullfighting line in Portugal.

Our foundation stock is based upon the revered Bocado breeders:  Miguel Angel Cardenas, Romero Benitez, Miguel Jose Lovera, Fernando C. de Terry y Isabel Morello Terry, Joaquin Conessa of Guadiana de Nobleza and Juan Manuel Urquijo y Novales.  This 'blend' retains the coveted Bocado attributes without breeding too closely.

We have occasionally outcrossed Bocado lines with the prestigious stud Maria Fernanda de Escalera & the Yeguada Militar through Leviton grandsons, a practice which has inspired breeders such as Cardenas to produce some of Spain's top horses.

We enjoy promoting and representing the PRE on a local & national level, participating in dressage & breed shows; medieval games,  exhibitions, parades and performances.   We hope you will find this website resourceful and will visit again as it continues to grow, now over 90 pages.  Email Susan Ambrose for more information.
